Due to one set of students ill and another out for the afternoon and rescheduled until Tuesday, I don't start teaching until 16.30 today.

Made beef jerky. venison jerky and pemmican. Blenderthing did NOT like the dried fruit; all the smoke came out and it won't work. [livejournal.com profile] pfy is off buying another one since it did not belong to us. I really really want to build that solar dehydrator now, or failing that get or make an electric one. I will definitely be doing pemmican again when the Saskatoon berries are ripe; buying dried berries that have no added sugar or vegetable oil is expensive, especially compared to "all you have to pay is your time and effort" foraged berries. It would be really neat to be able to easily preserve a lot more food without having to add loads of sugar , vinegar or alcohol to make it work, and dehydration is probably the simplest answer. Also, yay for food that is lightweight and nutritious. Also yay for jerky that is WAY cheaper than the additive-laden stuff from the shops.
