Thoughts, assorted and somewhat random
May. 22nd, 2006 07:05 am-Would getting a motorcycle license make me feel more confident about the possibility of bicycling in London? How much would lessons cost? Would it be worth it anyway? How fuel-efficient and fast are motorcycles if I wanted to use one for, say, getting from here to Hendon? How safe are they (better or worse than a bicycle, or about the same)? Am I better off just taking some cycling lessons? Should I do that anyway?
-All the rain. Looks set to continue most of the week. I am a happy gardener. I wish I had more water butts, though. The amount of water falling on London right now and being lost as run-off (instead of sinking into the soil) is criminal. Meh. What's permeable paving like these days? Which reminds me, I need to make some decisions about mulch for the vegetable patch. And plant the damned vegetable patch. It's going to be another late-starting year, I think, because I really ahve to prioritize academic work and exam preparation now.
-Boots didnt' sell on
niceboots so I guess I need to stick them on eBay. However, I have a) specific academic goals for today, b) to meet
purplekaz for lunch, c) to practise LOTS before my horn lesson which is tomorrow, d) to teach trumpet in Bethnal Green, e) to go to Aikido tonight, f) practise for my Kodaly exam tomorrow, and g) do some banking. Yeah. It'll wait.
-Going to try to base one meal per day on salad. This is partly to get out of the pasta, pasta all the time rut (even though I really do like pasta!), partly to get myself eating more fruit and veg, partly because a huge salad for lunch will keep me full longer in the afternoon, partly because hey! yummy salad. Today will be tomato and avocado and maybe some random greenstuff from the garden.
-My strawberries have made flower buds. If everything proceeds perfectly, someday I will have three strawberries. Hmm. I'm hoping they'll do better next year when they've had a chance to develop better root systems and so on.
-I am better at hitting a softball than I thought but still not very good. And I can't pitch to save my soul, but neither can anyone else.
-Must start running again. After this spell of rain. And after my trainers have dried out from yesterday.
-The utility belt is falling apart in many directions now. I am formulating a PLN for another one, which shall consist of a good leather belt (ie not ripped and with poky things like my current one, although it is still useful) and pockets that I can attach and detach as I please.
-Breakfast now. Breakfast sounds like a good idea. I'm hungry. I was thinking rice and I could put some of the leftover in with my salad for lunch, but I'm hungry so now I'm thinking poverty noodles and poached egg. Hmm.

Date: 2006-05-22 07:48 pm (UTC)I've been hit by cars whilst cycling, and whilst riding pillion on motorbikes. I fared far better on the motorbikes than I did on the cycles. I know which I'd rather be riding in London traffic.
The one is no more dangerous, in itself, than the other if you know what you're doing and have been trained. As my father told me, it's not your own riding you have to worry about - it's every other bloody idiot out there on the roads.

Date: 2006-05-22 08:02 pm (UTC)Better to get something larger than a 50cc as those things don't have acceleration at all really!
GET SAFETY GEAR! WEAR IT!
I did my CBT a little while ago with Woking Yamaha Centre, which was really interesting. I'm not planning on getting a bike at present, but Dave has a motorbike and I might be going on the back of it sometime so I thought it was better to have a clue!
Motorcycle also means you have insurance.
