I've had a headache since sometime yesterday afternoon. It abated a bit in the evening but this morning it is back full force. I'm not hungry or dehydrated, I didn't get particularly less sleep than normal, I don't feel otherwise ill, and I don't think I hit my head on anything. It doesn't feel like referred pain from muscle tension elsewhere. I've had 500mg paracetamol (which is like acetaminophen) but the headache persists. Any ideas? I am unaccustomed to random headaches and could do without this one.

Horn lesson was good. I have a hell of a lot of work to do, though. Also, random headaches during horn lesson = bad.

You can take up to 1000mg of paracetamol -- I find personally that 500mg has little or no effect, but twice that generally works fine. I have access to heavier duty painkillers (no thanks to arthritis), but generally try to avoid them because of their side effects. Over-the-counter paracetamol with codeine can be effective, however.

By the way, acetaminophen = paracetamol. It is the same stuff, just called something else in North America for no obvious reason.

For some reason I thought acetaminophen and paracetamol differed by a hydrogen or something like that.

Codeine makes me feel sick to my stomach.

Will try more paracetamol and see what happens, or possibly some ibuprofen with lunch if I'm not feeling much better by then.

I thought they were different, but looked it up and they were listed as equivalent. The Wikipedia article is pretty much as comprehensive as you could ever wish for:

You can take paracetamol and ibuprofen at the same time as they are different types of drug.

Also apparently these drugs are cumulative, so if you start taking them, keep on with it till you feel better as that will make them work best.

Codeine makes me go to sleep, so I don't take it!

Feel better soon!

Are you premenstrual? For some years in my late 30's and 40's I used to get a headache the day before. Maybe it was something you ate. Maybe you are coming down with a head cold. Maybe your eyes are tired. Maybe you need a cup of coffee. MMM coffee good. I usually a get headache without coffee with 30 minutes of putting feet on floor in morning...MMM coffee good. Of if I get more than 7 hours sleep. Go figure!

*hugs* when all my lot came down with flu they started with a headache first. I hope it isn't that.

I also wonder if it could be stress related.

Get well soon.

I suggest either stress, or possibly sinus pain? I've recently worked out I've been getting sinus headaches for years, without realising that's what they were. I guess it depends where the pain is centred.

Have you tried a cold compress? Sometimes that works for me. Sometimes slowing your breathing down and taking deep breaths helps too. *hugs*
