I don't understand the concept of gratitude... it implies as if a person owes something to someone. And since we are all equal, it implies the existence of that abominable entity, sometimes referred to as God...

Noticing the good things in my life helps me to feel happier about my circumstances. Gratitude is one method of doing this. I don't need to be grateful to any one or any thing, I can just be grateful, without owing anything.

If focusing on the positive things helps me to feel happier, and that in turn enables me to deal with what negative things there may be in an effective manner, I fail to see a downside here. It's all too easy to become discouraged when one chooses to focus only on the trials and tribulations of life. I don't want to spend my life only looking at the problems.

What does all being equal have to do with gratitude, or with the existence of God? I'm not sure I follow you, here.

Personally I have a very strong belief in God, but possibly not in the terms that many people would frame a higher power.

I believe this is what we historical materialists call "ideology". But naturally, I can see the benefits of successfully convincing yourself about the "power of positive thinking." However, God, provided he exists, probably deserves either pity or utter scorn.
