Any highly-skilled Mac geniuses out there? My horn teacher's home computer doesn't go.

I can probably get more detail out of him than that but don't want to bother him with it if it isn't going to be much help...

what's his computer doing? or will it not start up full stop?

If nothing else, I'd recommend he put in his startup DVD/CD (that he got when he bought the computer) and start up from the disc. (shut down, press the C key and hold it while starting up), and do a scan on the harddrive.

there are likely other things to help fix, but without more detail, not much I can do.

Not highly-skilled, but Mac compliant :) Or you could try [livejournal.com profile] macintosh but they'll definitely want more details, like what type of Mac, which OS, etc.

*nod* if the Mac will start up from the install disk, then at least it's still got its magic smoke :)

If it's a laptop, I'm willing to say -- without even knowing any more of the problem -- that the hard drive is totally dead. Very common problem.
