Horn cases

Phoned Phil Parker, no they don't stock Marcus Bonna cases and I'll have to go to Paxman for that, but they do have a lightweight hard screwbell backpack case for under £100 - could serve some purpose as a stopgap measure. It's a cheap Chinese imitation of the M.B. cases. I e-mailed Paxman to ask how much their slimline cases are in leather (rather than Cordura, yuck), haven't heard back yet.

Went to Phil Parker, talked about horn repairs (I have some dents I want removing, I want a handrest thing, I can't remember what he called it but it was duckfrog or frogduck or something odd like that. Definitely something with duck in it. I want new corks, I am missing a nut, and I'm thinking of having the mechanical rotary valves replaced with proper string rotary valves). They can't do the valve replacement or the nut and I'll ahve to talk to Paxman (expensive), they gave me some cork for free to put in myself, and the rest should add up to less than £100. Yay for that. Talked about various things I can do to repair my original Alex case, which won't be expensive but will be fiddly and involve me getting organised enough to buy angle brackets (the wood is coming unglued at the edges again), bolts and washers and nuts and all sorts of things like that.

Went upstairs, bought the cheap Chinese case, it came to £82.25 with the VAT so we called it an even 80. It is black (thank goodness). It is much bigger than I thought it would be, there is a LOT of unnecessary padding, however it is indeed a hard backpack screwbell case. The bit for the body of the horn is slightly too big, as expected, happily a rolled-up sarong solves this perfectly. There is no way it will fit in overhead bins on airlines. The backpack straps are a bit too long (it is easy enough to replace these with shorter strapping). Because my horn has strange weight distribution (due to the extra valve) it isn't really that stable standing on the ground on the side the 'feet' are on, but it is okay on the next side, so no matter, although I may experiment with putting the horn the other way up so as not to wear out the icky nylon so fast. Worn as a backpack it sticks out several inches to my left side, doesn't _quite_ fit comfortably through doorways, and is generally a nuisance. Did I mention that it is bulkier than it needs to be? It is bulky, seriously so. Even going on the train to Bath is going to be annoying because I won't be able to fit it between two seats facing away from each other, but I also won't be able to fit it overhead, so I'll have to sit close to the end of the carriage to keep an eye on it. In short, I still want to buy a Marcus Bonna slimline, in leather.

It is, however, gloriously light. My back will thank me for this a thousand times over. It also has the benefit that it is not coming apart, threatening to fall open, detaching itself from its handles, or anything like that.
