I'm not OFFENDED by the cartoons, I'm offended by the hypocrisy.

Date: 2006-02-06 09:36 pm (UTC)I'd certainly welcome a large spare building overlooking the Serpentine, I'd been thinking about moving somewhere, y'know, roomier. Oh well, at least they're not COMPLETELY CRACKERS and busily in the process of getting a nuclear bomb while the useful idiots in this country say it's their right because Israel has one too. Oh, what, they are, you say? Oh dear.

Date: 2006-02-07 03:18 am (UTC)Short summary: three cartoons that weren't even in the newspaper got printed, and they were pretty vile compared to the other ones that really did. I mean, I wasn't the only one mentally comparing the three cartoons to anti-Semitic cartoons in the Arab press. Those got printed by 1) Danish imans and 2) Danish evanglicals. There is a lot of speculation on who was involved.

Date: 2006-02-07 09:23 am (UTC)I've seen some horrific images of Jews by muslims in the past.
But the crux of the matter was them saying 'how dare you make out muslims to be bombers' and then firebomb the embassy?!

Date: 2006-02-09 12:25 am (UTC)I am deeply saddened that you chose to post this cartoon and that you got so many positive replies... this cartoon depicts the Danish cartoons as benign, which they weren't.
If anything, Jews should be standing up for Muslims -- not the extremists who blow things up, of course -- but our friends, neighbours, and co-workers -- we should be saying "yeah, it's happened to us for ages, it sucks, and we're sorry it's happened to you."
As my hubby pointed out the other night: how can someone claim they should have a right when they're not willing to defend it for others?

Date: 2006-02-09 10:25 am (UTC)The whole thing happened four months ago, the newspaper in question has apologised to the Islamic community for offence caused, and it's turned into a publicity exercise of gross magnitude.
It does call up some good questions about responsibility in publishing; at what point does a newspaper apologise for reporting that certain opinions exist? At what point is it misrepresentation to hide something that is happening, just because some people might feel disturbed or offended or threatened by it? If the BNP in Britain are growing I want to know about it, thanks; I'm not going to assume that a newspaper that reports that the BNP is growing is pro-BNP, and I'm not going to assume that a newspaper that prints cartoons that may be offensive to some people is saying that those beliefs are right, particularly when the cartoons are printed as part of an ongoing dialogue about freedom of speech and press.

Date: 2006-02-09 01:09 am (UTC)It's all pretty sad that a bunch of people get upset of a bunch of images in a publication which they don't even read.
Cause & affect, if it doesn't bloody affect you, don't bloody complain about it.
A bunch of muslims trying to get international sanctions against denmark probably has some effect on me so I'm going to bloody complain about it.
I've seen more offensive cartoons about members of parliament.
On the freedom of speach thing:
It's OK to express your opinion.
It's not OK to impose your opinions on others.
I'm pretty certain the paper which published the cartoons is not guilty of this, whilst I'm pretty sure the muslims who are making a song and dance about it are very guilty of trying to impose their opinions on others.
A caveat to the above, the former must be within the laws of the country you are in, for instance it would not be OK to publish the cartoons in a country where it would be agaist the law, but then, I'm pretty sure that danish law doesn't prohibit the publication of those cartoons.
It all gets dodgy when it comes to the Internet, as the pages can be viewed in many countries. Having said that there are far more predjudiced and obscene views expressed on the internet than I have ever seen in the press.
If something has little or no direct effect on you, don't bloody complain about it.
I'm sure I could write more on this, but I'm not going to waste my words.
