So, I have this dress. I've tried twice now to sell it on eBay with no joy. I know the pictures load awfully slowly but I suspect the problem is that there are loads of dresses out there and people just aren't that interested.

I'm now not so sure what to do with it. It seems a shame to cut it up for scraps; although a pair of hairfalls made from vintage silk could be quite a nice thing there is the risk they may not sell, and it would be a lot of sewing to make that many fabric strips without rough edges (although not too bad with a machine). I don't think I have much chance of making the skirt half of it fit me, although it's worth further inspection - but when do I wear cream? I could try to dye it purple I guess, which would hide the stains as well, but again... it seems a shame. Someone worked hard to put the thing together and taking it apart or altering it drastically seems wrong, somehow, although I wouldn't object to someone else trying to dye it in order to wear it (the lace probably won't come out right, though, trimming is annoying that way).

Antiques Roadshow won't be back in London in 2006, so I've missed the boat on that. And I'm not sure they really do clothing anyway.

I don't like having this lovely dress just taking up space in my closet. It's not going to fit me again, so it's got to go. Helf?

You could offer it to an amateur dramatics society?

Maybe. It seems a bit delicate and fine to be used for prancing about a stage sweating profusely, though. All the dramatic stuff I've taken part in, either as actor or as musician, has seen the costumes take a hell of a lot of abuse.

Take it down to the vintage shops in Spitalfields and Bethnal green.

I've just read the description several times, but I seem to be being blonde: what sort of size is it...?

Give it away?

(although try the vintage shops first)

You'd be surprised how much of an effect loading time has on somebody's willingness to bid on an eBay item. If I have to sit there for more than 30 seconds waiting for pictures to load I just hit the back button and look at something else.

I'm sure you could dye it.

It's in the auction title; UK 12.

Doh. See: blonde.

[livejournal.com profile] ewtikins - I looked at it originally, and thought that it wouldn't be boob-friendly enough, as it's oldish. If it weren't for that, I'd have bought it. What do you think...?

If you'd like to come by and try it on (or alternately I can come to you), you'd be most welcome. You live Canada Water-ish, yes?

Hard to say how boob-friendly it is, really, but would be worth a try.

See, I open individual auctions in new tabs, and if they haven't finished loading yet I go back to the first tab and look for other stuff while I'm waiting for them to load.

Can you measure it across the boobs, so I can get an idea?

Yes, we're Canada Water-ish (that's the nearest tube).

Measuring from where the arms join the body it is 36" around, but the armholes are actually quite large and the sleeves quite generous, so there may be a little more room in there.

Oh, no chance for me then, sadly!

Have you tried [livejournal.com profile] niceboots (or possibly [livejournal.com profile] nice_boots)?

Maybe it could be tie-dyed, and then the fabric/lace not dying evenly wouldn't matter. :)

Or perhaps you could save it and use it to trim some pillow shams or curtains, or other linens.

It is a lovely dress, but my guess why there isn't much interest is because when it comes to wedding gowns- people get opinionated about finding one that matches that dream gown in their head. heh.

Perhaps you need new photos of it being worn by someone?

It's a UK size 12 - there's a chance it would fit me, so if you like I'll bring a decent camera with me on Tuesday and after my lesson, I could model it for you so you can get some good shots to relist it with. For a dress that style, it really needs to be worn to show it off properly - you can't get a decent idea of how it hangs when it's hanging on a hanger.

This would be good, and much appreciated. I think it would probably fit you - I wore it for a concert once, in my thinner days.

I think the point is that most people probably don't use tabs like that, so making the pictures load faster (if possible) would help sell the dress.

Not possible without using another host or losing picture quality, really; they're not huge pictures by most standards, just slow to get off the server.

Not sure I am up to shaving those particular yaks for this particular dress just yet.

Have you thought of listing it in the vintage section, rather than the wedding one? No idea if this would help, but it maybe wedding folks are after new/current stuff?

I can put them on etla.org somewhere if you want, which has all the bandwidth.
