With my typing speed I wonder whether it would be better to get a job as an audio typist or something like that. Something where I do not have to deal with other people much or make any decisions beyond whether to ask what a word was. I imagine I could do medical audio typing pretty easily - I can spell most medical words on hearing them and I do know how to use a dictionary.

I guess I'm just apprehensive about my interview this morning. I do not want another office job where I end up with stress caused by other people not really quite doing their jobs, and me being the 'bottom of the foodchain' so to speak. I want something where I can go do work, do my clearly-defined, stress-free job, and come home from work and NOT THINK ABOUT MY JOB. I have teaching and still some office work at Yakar to think about, on top of various other things... I don't want to add any more jobs that will require too much creative thinking or effort, whether it is required to deal with the people or the actual work. I'm worried that this job, although it sounds fairly straight forward (invoice processing, typing, photocopying, filing - I figure if I can do filing at Yakar I can do filing ANYWHERE), will not fit the bill. I suppose there is only one way to find out though.

I imagine it really depends how fast you type. If you type very fast it is to your advantage to be paid for the work rather than per hour. If you are a slower typer then typing per hour would be better. I guess also if you are paid for the actual work then in some ways there might be less pressure in terms of how many breaks you are allowed, how often, and so on.

I know that at, say, 90wpm (the 102wpm I got at the job agency the other day surprised even me, and I KNOW I type bloody fast), I would be getting a lot more done than someone who types 60 or 70wpm. Ideally I would want my pay to reflect this. If we are both paid by the hour, then it doesn't.

I'm with you - I guess I've just never heard of audio-typing 'piecework', if you like. If you are a very fast typist, then you could ask for a higher hourly rate. I think I got something like 12 quid an hour (but this was pre-11/09/01), plus I got offered several permanent positions. And I only type something like 80wpm - you're way faster!

The other thing about comparing yourself (as a fast & accurate typist) to someone who does 60 to 70 wpm, is that YOU will be the one who gets repeat assignments, and the adoration of all ;)
