Low Wattage Web Design - because white costs money.

I may well be doing some re-design soon based on this.

I followed several links down to confirm that the thing about white using more energy is for CRT monitors, not LCD ones. I didn't notice if LCD monitors use more energy for any particular color, but it did say they are lower power overall anyway.

Though, maybe it needs some accessibility types to have a look at it too.

I'd very much doubt they use more power for white. LCD monitors are backlit, so the light is there no matter what colour is being displayed.

That's interesting, I hadn't even considered the difference in wattage used based on the color on the monitor. Definitely something to keep in mind whenever I do site alterations and whatnot, although my main reasons for preferring lighter background with darker text is that I can look at the screen longer before getting migraines than if I'm reading light text on dark backgrounds. Yellow on black is particularly evil.

Indeed. LCDs will probably use fractionally (probably unmeasurably though) more power displaying black than white.

This is, frankly, bollocks. :-)
