Link Round-Up
Jul. 14th, 2007 03:48 pmNote: I know it's bad form not to credit for links, but I've got loads of them and I do genuinely forget where most of them come from, so I'm acknowledging no sources rather than trying to find sources that are long-lost.
Food Co-Op in Walworth - looks like something I'd quite like to support, although at the moment I lack the resources to get involved. Lots of other neat stuff at 56a Infoshop.
I would dearly like a one of these. If nothing else - if I had to cycle to keep the laptop powered up, I'd get slimmer in no time!
It's all very Malthusian really. One more reason I'm glad to be learning foraging and gardening, even if there's not a lot I can do it's better than nothing.
There's a lot of good thoughtful writing about sustainability and self-sufficiency at this blog.
I'm still finding myself tempted by this book. The irony is almost palpable.
In just over a week, I will be headed here. Yay!
The American College of Neuropsychopharmacology have made a huge text book freely available online...
News from the Department of the Bleeding Obvious. Only, it might not be obvious if you haven't been following Peak Oil news and stuff like that.
Cute. Surely not too hard to build something similar out of fimo or another widely-available material, though, right?
How exactly does one go about finding out whether one has Alpha Delta Sleep Disorder? Also, what (if any) treatments are available? I think this could be a root of many fibro/ME/CFS illnesses, although obviously I'm not medically trained or saying that there are not other causes as well.
There may be a link between microRNA and inflammatory skin conditions including psoriasis and atopic eczema. May also be implicated in other inflammatory conditions.
Lots of plastic bags to get rid of? Like sewing? Try fusing them together. Yes. Really. I am thinking 'rain hat' myself...
Notes from the Conservative Yeshiva: So What Is Really Going On? What The Media Do Not Report, by Jim Lederman, transcribed by
lethargic_man. Well worth reading, I think.
Alcoholism on the rise in USA. Or, well, it would be if everyone did this. *smirk*
Aspartame causes a dose-dependent increase in cancers, according to new research by the Ramazzini Foundation. I haven't seen this one in the mainstream media.
In lighter news, Student knits her own Ferrari. Bless.
Can any of you chemistry geeks identify this molecule?
This bothers me. I see no mention of the fact that obesity may be a symptom of other risk factors, rather than a cause. I know "correlation" is not the same as cause, but the vast majority of people reading this won't think that far. All other things being equal obesity may not actually be all that bad, it's just that all other things are very rarely equal. Better to tell prospective mothers to make sure they are eating a healthy diet with plenty of fresh veg and some fruit, and getting adequate exercise and rest, than to tell them to lose weight, especially when so many weight-loss diets involve restriction in nutrient intake. GRAH. I feel strongly about this. I really feel that fit fat people are likely to be healthier than unfit slim people.
Vancouver in summer is warm shocker. At least people are taking a hint from one power failure and trying to be sensible about it where they can.
Copper is getting expensive. Even when you take into account the crapness of the US dollar at the moment, that's a lot.
Pretty things. The icicle art is particularly impressive.
Anarcho-herbalism. I don't agree with everything here. However, this struck a chord with me: "A society of people who are responsible for their own health and able to gather or grow their own medicines is a hard society to rule."
