Good, Bad, Ugly
Jul. 21st, 2007 06:47 amThe Good:
-I am up bright and early, and have already done some of my errands AND had freshly-picked blackberries for breakfast in the glorious sunshine - worth getting up early for, truly (although I think I'll still fry up some mushrooms and toms in a bit). I also picked some wormwood for making bug repellent with - I'm told the midges in Scotland can be pretty brutal, and though I grew up with mosquitoes so big they had their own airports, I also grew up with DEET; I don't want to be totally defenceless. Making the repellent shouldn't actually take very long - heat some water and oil with crushed wormwood in, let it cool, add some vodka and bottle it in a handy spray bottle. I'll get some essential oils to add once I'm there, in case it doesn't work (things like citronella), but I'm eager to at least try it.
The Bad:
-I didn't sleep particularly well, my legs are being complainy as a result of that and yesterday's escapades and I'm still trying to shake off that goddamned cold I started two weeks ago, which I'd rather not take with me to Scotland. I suspect what I actually need to do is spend a day or so in bed, doing not much of anything and being brought hot chicken soup. This is rather unlikely at this point. However, I think it's unlikely I'm actually going to get properly ill or anything, I'll just be fighting off this stupid cold for ages now it's settled; lots of people have had this one for longer than the standard 10 days, so it isn't actually cause for alarm, just annoying. I'll figure out where the nearest GP and walk-in centre are before I leave, just in case - it's as well to know these things.
The Ugly:
-I didn't get nearly as much packing done yesterday as I intended to, and I really do NEED to finish it today, as well as significant and noticeable tidying and various other administration bits and pieces.

Our Scotish taxi driver told us about it the other day, I've order a few, but they won't be in until next Friday...when are you leaving?
Also, on the Dollis walk by Hampstead Garden Suburb we discovered some yummy plums, tiny ones, both yellow and purple types, the size of a large cherry, but perfectly ripe and sweeter then big ones!

Date: 2007-07-21 12:53 pm (UTC)A bit of link following suggests that it is coumarin that is the active thing that makes it repellent; coumarin is also present (though in smaller amounts) in lavender, cinnamon, sweet clover and woodruff. I'll definitely take the lavender oil and the cinnamon oil along with me...
