Sweet corn

Just ate corn on the cob from the garden.

It was yum, except for the one that was overripe. The individual cobs were a bit small, probably as a result of me planting them really quite close together.

I never thought it would work in a block that small!

Book is here. Thank you! Have read 28 pages so far and it seems useful.

I once grew maize in a planterbox - 6 plants - all but one of them produced some tasty cobs :-)

Coriander does grow here; it's not the best time of year for it but it wouldn't hurt to buy a plant from a supermarket (usually ASDA has them for under £1), put it in a larger pot and see what happens.

That reminds me of my Thumbalina one-liner (as the old woman) circa 1994: "Plant these seeds in a flowerpot and see what happens".

The one time we tried growing corn in in the garden back home, we checked on them one day and thought they needed another day or so. The next morning the racoons chews on all the cobs. It must have been ripe then.

Last year I tried growing sweet corn in my allotment. The cobs from that harvest where also to small to be edible.

Reading about your harvest makes me wonder if they might need extra fertilizer or a place in direct sunlight (even though I doubt the latter since the farmers manage to get decent crops with fields of closely planted corn.

They definitely want a warm spot! Fields of closely planted corn are all the same height so all have at least some access to direct sunlight...

They're not averse to some fertilizer either. Plant them after a heavily-fertilized tomato or potato crop and they should do okay, or so John Seymour says in his book.

This means mine are probably ready also ... I had a look at them a few days ago and thought they were almost there!
