Life Interrupted - one of the better articles I've read on the subject. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] technomom for the link.

You have a choice, folks.

You know, people do annoy me sometimes.

Just called up the mother of someone I taught last year. When I phoned in the autumn to arrange a new lesson time, she told me that her daughter wouldn't be taking piano lessons this term because she was changing schools and needed time to adjust to the new workload (because of course the ten or twenty minutes per day that I ask my beginning students to practise is really just too much, obviously!). Ever the optimist, I offered to call back in a few months to see how she was getting on with the schoolwork and whether she'd like to continue with her lessons - this was well-received and so I made a note of it. She even said she looked forward to hearing from me.

So, just now as I was phoning all the rest of my students to remind them that on Sunday their lessons start up again, I also phoned her. She thanked me for calling. She then denied that she'd agreed for me to phone back and gave me a blank "X does not want to pursue piano lessons any further."

How much do you want to bet the kid is taking piano lessons through her school, and the parents were too disorganised to give me a ring instead?

Ah well, at least this one was polite.

Left a message with mother of possible two new students. I don't think they're likely to phone back but I left my number anyway; if I haven't heard anything by Thursday, I'll try again. Also phoned all my regular students and either spoke to people or left messages. Go me.
