Posting from Chicken Central. It took me all bloody day to pack, it always does, I should have done it last night when I was too tired to care. It was nearly six by the time I got here; not a good start for the dog to be out on her own in the dark like that on the first day! poor thing. But all eight chickens were roosting happily in the shed, so at least Monsieur Rénard hasn't been to visit. The cats aren't hiding and sulking like they usually do, either, so they must be getting accustomed to my visits. The dog is fed and I don't have to feed teh cats, chickens and rabbits until tomorrow morning.
There was, however, a frantic note from the Chicken Lady, in her best doctor's scrawl, which means she wrote in all caps in an attempt to make it readable (this almost works). "HELP! Boiler problems (this morning)," it read, and detailed that she thought she might have fixed it but if not to phone Ollie and he will come and fix it and she'll pay him when she gets back from Cyprus in a month.
So, the long and short of it is that the boiler is fubar, and Ollie is going to come and fix it tomorrow morning... so much for my nice, leisurely lie-in. By the time I'd sorted this out it was also too late for me to get to Aikido, which means no Aikido at all for me this week (and I think Sensei still has my membership card, so I can't go to other dojos until after he gets back from Japan in... a month? not that I have time). It isn't so bad, though; the flash boiler is lovely for taking long hot baths but for getting clean the electric showers will do (even if it will take ages to get my hair clean with that sort of flow), and I've found a space heater so I'm heating up the bedroom a bit, though I'll use hot water bottles at night. Also, the Chicken Lady decided it's silly for me to bring crockery (I can't use her china for various reasons having to do with kashrut) all the way from Docklands if I'm doing this every year, so I now have a couple of bowls and several plates that live here permanently for me to use while she's away - and she left some soup on the hob for me, which I'll heat up shortly. The house is big and draughty, and without central heating it can be pretty unpleasant (feels like about 9°C), but little things like this do make life easier. In fact, it would be positively cosy if she'd remembered to leave any mugs for my use.
Yes, there are bowls and plates, but no mugs I can use. I'd give a lot for a cup of tea right now! But I can get mugs tomorrow. I'll have a bowl of soup instead. I suppose I could have a bowl of tea, but that would get silly.
All will be well.
