My glasses are broken. I can't see. I'm typing this with the aid of my trusty pinhole glasses, but I have far from good vision with them, so please 3exucse the typoes (which are worse because all the stress).

I have a rehearsla at 15.00, which I ahve to go to. I sent a text to the coach saying my glasses are broken and I can't see and he wants mt eo go anyway. I'm not sure what part of 'I can't see' he doesn't understand. I will NOT be able tos ee the music. I'm meant to be treaching after that, which I can probably just about do, and then it is Aikido, which could be... interesting, without glasses, but I'd like to go along and see what Sensei says, anyway.

They are the same broken they were when they broke in August - plstic snapped right actross the middle. The lenses are still fine (okay, the left one is HORRIBLY scratched because they didn't put scratchproof cotaing on it), but there is no good way to hold them onto my fcae. Last time this happened I tried tape and glue but there isn't really enough for tape nad glue to hold onto, so they just kept falling apart.

I wish I'd sorted out contact lenses for choosing new frames. Arsethorns. Arsethorns AND buggeration (gotta hurt).

EDIt: I have an appointment at Vision Express at 12:50. I guess I'd better go and become non-stinky.

I recommend metal frame glasses. If they get bent out of shape, one can usually bend them back.

When I had metal frames in Canadia the lenses used to pop out all the time, because I'd go from cold -30C outdoor air to warm 18C indoor air and the metal would expand faster than the lenses.

Trying to find clear lenses when they are the things you normally use for vision is a pain.

I also have very thick lenses, even with high-density plastic, and many metal frames are unsuitable for my lenses. The rest look pretty bad. The last metal frames I had used to catch my hair all the time (although to be fair these do that a bit at the hinges), which hurts.

I live in a milder climate now, but I'm very disappointed with these frames. I think they are faulty. The last ones broke in August 2005 after I'd had them since December 2004. They seem to last nine months and then break. This is pants. I will not be getting these particular frames again.

Shame as I like the shape of them.

You're not in kansasCanada anymore, though.

I've been fine with metal frames so far, but I don't have to wear glasses all the time like you.

Yup! Though I do wonder if Brits would still go around wearing bugger all and bitching if the temperature dropped to -30 degrees...

Mind you if it did we'd be screwed. Many people would not have suitable clothing to wear not to mention that buildings and heating systems aren't designed for that kind of weather...

I wear metal frames all the time and have never had a problem with them breaking. My lenses aren't very thick though.

My glasses are Ti-Flex memory metal. Ridiculously flexible and all but unbreakable.

You can get titanium "memory wire" or something frames - you can basically tie them in a knot and sit on them and they'll come back into shape no problem. They're expensive but may be worth it if you have to wear them all the time.

you can also get special thin lenses made of a different quality glass - they are only made to order and are more expensive, but you can get them.

I get those anyway.

Get two pairs this time!

Seconded. I'm paranoid about breaking my glasses, so I have 2 pairs plus keep some old ones which are not-good-but-better-than-nothing.

I also have two pairs of glasses - one normal and one sunglasses - I only use them for driving and going to the theatre/cinema/concerts though (a bit short sighted!). Thanks for reminding me - must get my sunglasses unsquished ([livejournal.com profile] kiwi_dave accidentally sat on them some time ago when I left them on the passenger seat of my car!)

Don't optical places do a "one hour framing service" ... can you take them back and see if they can patch them up for you? Have you got the time?

Hmmm.. since the plastic's fairly thick, you could come by here and I could drill holes in the center peice. Screw some sort of metal brace to it to hold it together.
You have my number if you'd like to try!

Travelling to somewhere I've never been when I can't see is not going to be a winner.

I got your text:(

I hate being so far away as to not be able to do anything useful. Second the going to an optician and seeing if they can sort you out with a new pair quickly and a spare pair more slowly. Might be worth getting your eyes tested while you're at it.

http://www.glassesdirect.co.uk/ are worth looking at for getting your spare pair cheaply, but given how disabled you are by lack of glasses, I reckon it's worthwhile paying what you need to to get a new pair quickly.

*touches wood* - I've never broken a pair of glasses. I've always had metal frames, because I've not needed particularly thick lenses and I've generally thought the metal frames look nicer than the plastic ones. It might be worth asking for advice on which frames are least breakable - say that you do a lot of sport (and you do eg Aikido & running) and that you're worried about breakages.

My current frames have a springy bit in the hinge, which springs backwards when I put them on/take them off - this is useful, though I'm not getting the same thing in the pairs I ordered on Saturday.

Oh no! :( *hugs*

I hope they can sort something out, preferably something actually half robust and that this doesn't screw up your finances too much...

I can't hear out of either ear properly and I'm wondering if it's practical for me to do Aikido either.
