The weekend, and stuff.
May. 28th, 2003 08:35 amThursday night I went to Bath.
The train was late, so I got in even later than usual, and went to bed late. Friday I got up and went busking, which was okay, then came home and made a nice supper for people. I managed toburn caramelise the tomato-mushroom thingy, and I actually did not overcater and may have even undercatered, for once. I actually had to go without one dish for everyone else to be served. I guess I usually cook for four or five, and there were suddenly eight. It was good though.
Oh, and I got a phonecall about a job interview, which was supposed to be today (Wednesday). Now it has been postponed to sometime next week, due to scheduling difficulties at their end. It does not sound like they are interviewing many candidates, somehow.
On a side note, have you ever noticed how some people, when serving themselves at a meal, seem to have no concept of 'how much food is left and how many people are yet to be served' as a factor in how much food they give themselves? Does it piss anyone else off? I find it incredibly selfish and rude. I do not feel that an adult should need to be admonished about leaving enough for everyone else. Even if it is super-yummy garlic bread. Graah.
Saturday was a bit lazier.
shevek and I cycled halfway to Bristol, and back again, which I guess is about 15 miles. It was nice, but the bicycle I was using was completely crap. I think the saddle was designed with the express purpose of causing extensive bruising to various intimate bits. It did not help that the seat was about six inches too low and various other things were wrong with it as well. I tried the one
shevek was riding, which is a very nice bike, but is one of those racing drop-handlebar things. I've never really been able to ride those, they make my back hurt and I am not at all confident on them. Maybe my back gets too tense because I am nervous, maybe it is just trying to look up and ahead when ergonomically my head should be facing the ground, I don't know. I just know I find it really uncomfortable. So, even though the saddle was a bit better (funnily enough
shevek did not have trouble with the saddle on the bike I was riding), I didn't ride it for long. We did some riding in traffic as well - a bit scary as I haven't ridden in traffic since the summer of 1998,. and that was tame Canadian traffic that drives on the OTHER side of the road. I also haven't really ridden a bicycle at all for three years. I kept feeling the need for rearview mirrors of some sort. Is one supposed to look behind oneself at all when cycling? Or is one just supposed to pedal faster? The idea of turning my head to look behind me while I am moving forward at a fast pace is uncomfortable, to say the least.
All in all the cycling went well. I did not fall off, even on bumpy bits. I didn't really keep up with
shevek but considering the difference in bicycles and fitness levels, this is not surprising (althugh we did not really cycle very hard). So, I may try to find a bicycle in Bath, as well, or at least a different saddle for the one that is there. It would be good to be able to cycle to Bristol for a day.
Saturday night was Entropy. I danced a lot and wore my new wool hair falls, which got a great response.
My horn case broke. The screws for the hinges came out of the holes. Wood filler has been applied and new holes drilled but I forgot the screws in Bath, and they need to be replaced anyway. In the meantime my case is held together by four green bungee cords. I would like to do something to make the bungee cords more attractive. Green is not my colour.
Sunday was more busking, and digitec in Bristol.
shevek cycled there and back, I took the bus there and got a lift back.
Monday was still more busking, and I decided to stay Monday nigth and come back Tuesday morning due to being very tired and just not wanting to face having to travel, as well as
shevek having been out all day. We had a quiet night in, I packed, and left in the morning.
Trains were late coming back as well so I was a bit late in for work (not much though) I was highly amused by my boss phoning me to ask me to come in and unlock the office as she had locked herself out, and me not being able to help this time as I was ON THE TRAIN. Hahahaha. I guess it is not that funny but I found it funny because I have had to go in three or four times now to unlock the office because of her leaving her keys at home, or bringing her wrong keys, or locking her keys into the office. Work was mildly boring. I must be absolutely mad, applying for more office work. Graaaah. The main problem, of course, is that I do not actually enjoy working in an office.
I keep toying with the idea of training for a triathlon. Must resist starting further projects... must resist... there is no way I am anywhere near fit enough for a triathlon, and while it would be an admirable goal, the running would not be great for my back, methinks.
I have been given some seed potatoes... so now I HAVE to do some weeding in the garden today, to plant them. At least the weather is good.
If someone would like to tell me why I was awake at FIVE AM this morning, I will give them... well, nothing, because I already know. I was awake because it was light in my room and there were squirrels or something making a lot of noise in the tree outside. So, my body decided it had had enough of this sleep malarkey, even though I didn't get to sleep until about midnight. I should really get some blackout curtains. Or start getting to bed much earlier (after the weekend's schedule, midngiht was early!). Or both. Ah well, it is nearly June, and after the solstice this all goes into reverse and I'll start waking later and later again, instead of earlier and earlier. I think I will try to stick to 6am or 6.30am waking time, though, if I can. It is useful to be able to start my day in a relaxed and orderly fashion, even if it is all a delusion and there is no way I can finish everything.
Today should be... interesting. I must go to bed early tonight though.
