Excellent article on peak oil and economic collapse. Link from [livejournal.com profile] hairyears.

"If the economy, and your place within it, is really important to you, you will be really hurt when it goes away. You can cultivate an attitude of studied indifference, but it has to be more than just a conceit. You have to develop the lifestyle and the habits and the physical stamina to back it up. It takes a lot of creativity and effort to put together a fulfilling existence on the margins of society. After the collapse, these margins may turn out to be some of the best places to live."

Ah. Thanks. The article just prompted me to do what I've been meaning to do for ages: start a local sustainable living/survivalism group. At least, I made the post on Craigslist :)

Mostly, I agree with the idea that it's really easy to collect lots of ideas and never put them into practice. Being a wage-slave doesn't leave much time for anything else. Time to start putting a bit more into practice.

Good job the plans for this year including expanding the vegetable patch in the garden. Some chickens wouldn't go a miss either, especially as I can ask my sister for advice (she has 6!)

He makes some interesting points. However, I have also seen some of this from the other side, and he makes gross generalisations and fudges his "data" horribly. For a start, the assumption that the Russian economy has "recovered" deserves lynching.

I didn't get the impression that the Russian economy had recovered from reading that article; maybe I just didn't let it past the bullshit filter? Not sure.

Which of the generalisations/data do you think are inaccurate? I don't have enough points of reference to be able to tell, myself.
