Hmm... I've no idea about the Nalgene's response to heat... It's a high density polycarbonate/lexan polymer, also used in bulletproof 'glass'... means the things are bullet proof. But I've no idea what it's thermal properties are. I don't think it'd burn, maybe not melt, but it would probably discolour and distort at high enough temps... weather boiling water is hot enough I don't know.

But the pencil I use is a modern alloy of exotic metals that works on ordinary untreated paper, doesn't decay or tarnish and can be drawn or written just like an ordinary pencil... actually the mark it leaves looks just like pencil, except it doesn't rub out.
