I've never been convinced. Given the price you'd have to be really sure you were going to be using livejournal for a long time...

Yep. A couple of years ago, I'd have done it. Now, well, I have 275 friends on LJ, up from 250 a couple of months ago, and 156 friends on Facebook, up from 80 a couple of months ago. The writing may be on the wall, as the latter imports LJ posts as notes, and I haven't done a poll in ever.

I prefer to keep up a paid account on a yearly basis; I've been on LJ for nearly 6 years now, and don't anticipate leaving any time soon. Given that I also pay for extra pictures, overall in the long run I think paying for my account yearly will actually work out better financially for LJ than buying a permanent account. (Particularly given my tendancy to buy paid time for friends as gifts as well!)
