I prefer to keep up a paid account on a yearly basis; I've been on LJ for nearly 6 years now, and don't anticipate leaving any time soon. Given that I also pay for extra pictures, overall in the long run I think paying for my account yearly will actually work out better financially for LJ than buying a permanent account. (Particularly given my tendancy to buy paid time for friends as gifts as well!)
