In the past I have experimented with making various flavoured vodkas, as well as sloe gin. The results have been pretty good.

This year, I have plans for apple, elderberry, blackberry, hawthorn, rosehip, quince and fennel flavoured vodkas, as well as the usual sloe gin. All the fruits are foraged locally by me.

If you want a bottle, you must either:
a) buy me twice that volume of vodka or gin,
or b) pay me £10 per 500mL of liquid you get back
or c) work out some other useful barter.

The way it works, is you give me a bottle of vodka (or money for a bottle of vodka), I give it back but half the vodka has been removed, and replaced with magical liqueur-making ingredients.

Most of these will not be ready to drink until Christmas. They make excellent gifts. If you want several small bottles instead of one big bottle, that can be arranged, but I may ask for your help in acquiring small glass bottles if I run out.

Things are mostly early this year in terms of harvest, so deadlines for orders are as follows:

apple, blackberry, elderberry Friday 14th September
fennel, sloe Friday 21st September
rosehip, hawthorn Friday 28th September
quince end of October

All of these are according to availability. If I get out on Friday 14th September and absolutely all of the elderberries are gone, there's no way I can make your elderberry vodka. On the other hand if I'm still seeing elderberries later in the season I may extend deadlines.

Please specify whether you want sweetened or unsweetened (though all sloe gin will be sweetened unless otherwise specified, because that is what sloe gin IS). Most of these flavours are pretty rough if they don't have some sugar in them. If you want unsweetened, I suggest buying me good-quality vodka rather than paying me £10 for what I can buy at ASDA.

I may have extras to sell later but if you know what you want your best bet is to order now by replying to this or e-mailing me.

I like sloe gin, so am potentially interested -- paying you would probably be easier since we're in different cities and all.

I'll be passing through Cambridge twice tomorrow on my way to and from Bury St. Edmunds, if that's any use. Contact details here (http://ewtikins.livejournal.com/435748.html).

For getting sloe gin back to you I may well do the "Hey, who is going to Cambridge any time soon?" thing, as posting glass bottles full of alcohol is going to be expensive at best.

If you want to broaden your stock a little you can also use the same technique with brandy. I've done apricot, cherry, strawberry and blackcurrant before and they are georgeous.

I also freeze the fruit I take out and put it in cake.

For sloe gin, hawthorn vodka and rosehip vodka I'll leave the fruit in the bottles and let the customers use it; sloes would be lovely in cake but neither rosehips or haws are going to be particularly pleasant.

I'm too late for cherries this year, I didn't get enough strawberries from my plants this year to consider doing anything with alcohol and I think the local blackcurrants are mostly gone. But yes, fruit + brandy is generally good, so I may well offer it at some point.

How do you know when sloes and rosehips are ready to harvest? I think I have both.

Date: 2007-09-07 11:36 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ewtikins.livejournal.com
Rosehips should be bright red and it's usually best to wait until after the first frost.

Sloes, when they go blue. They'll be sour as all hell and need loads of sweetening whatever you do.

Any recommendations for collecting rosehips in a region that hardly ever frosts?

Date: 2007-09-08 12:15 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ewtikins.livejournal.com
Collect them once they're red, and then put them in a freezer for a day or two before using them.

OK, things got a little hectic, but it looks like I could manage either Thursday or Friday this week — would either of those suit you? I'm not sure exactly what time I'd be able to get there, because I'd be on my way from somewhere to somewhere else, but afternoonish.

Date: 2007-09-10 11:34 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ewtikins.livejournal.com
Neither of those are ideal; if where you are going to/from is central it might make more sense for me to meet you, unless we're talking about huge amounts of gin here.

Thursday afternoon is better for me than Friday afternoon, though.

No, I won't be going anywhere near the centre. Might be better if I come next week? If we choose a day now then I can arrange work around that. You said Friday 21st is the deadline for sloe gin, and I'm currently free Monday 17th to Friday 21st inclusive. It's up to you which day I come, but the sooner I know the better.

I don't have my "next week" schedule until tomorrow or Wednesday of this week, because of academic stuff, so I can't tell you yet when I'll be free, but there's bound to be a time somewhere in there that I can do.

Failing that it looks like I will be at B-Movie; if you wanted to send the gin along with someone who will be going, that might work too. Again, this isn't going to work if it's 10L of the stuff. I have no idea how much you actually want!

Letting me know by Wednesday or Thursday is fine, possibly even later — if I get some work in that I need to schedule and I haven't heard from you then I'll let you know.

I have a litre, like I said up there at the start of this thread :)

Hello — as you may have guessed, this week got a bit full. I'm going to be working flat-out tomorrow and Friday, so I don't think I will be able to get you gin in time for this year. Next year, I hope!

Hello there
Sorry to crash your journal but [livejournal.com profile] elmyra thought you may be availble for paid cat feeding duties? I am going to be away between September 24th and Oct 8th, and desperately need to arrange someone to feed my 2 cats and give them insulin injections (I live near Mill Hill Broadway/Apex Corner). If you are able to or interested in this, would you mind dropping me a line on alexx@alexx.org and letting me know what you normally charge?
thank-you!

I would definitely love some sloe gin, and the others sound interesting too. I've shunted £20 your way on a bank transfer - put as much of it as you need to some good gin and a decent profit, and if there's anything left over I wouldn't mind trying a small sample of whatever fruit you find yourself in excess of.
