Wonderful storm here. It's good to be inside in the warm and dry, but I am half-tempted to go out and play in the big wind. There's thunder and everything. The water is running down the loft window in a sheet, not droplets.

I still wish I had another water butt. I think I may just have to do something about this sometime in the near future.

No thunder but yay! rain - couldn't even see across the Thames ten minutes ago. And all of a sudden it's brightening up again.

I got caught in five wonderful minutes' worth of heavy rain and thunder, and it moved on - unless it's just on the other side of the house. On this side, though, I have the faintest trace of a rainbow against the grey clouds.

not sure if this is new info for you or not, at the moment the reservoirs near me are way down and normally at this time of year are full, I have heard the ones down south are even emptier. So it might be a good idea if you can get water butts as I predict standpipes might happen next summer. I hope I am wrong but have seen this happen before.

Yes, I know we're in a drought - thanks for the heads up anyway.

I have one 200L water butt; last summer this was nearly sufficient to keep my garden watered (it was very dry in London). I'd like another two or three, ideally, because I'll have more plants this year. I might set up some sort of greywater system to use the water from the washing machine if I get some eco-balls (http://www.ecotopia.co.uk/product_info.php?pName=eco-balls) to replace the ecover detergent I currently use (which will eventually kill the plants if I put it on the garden!).

I spent time in the Canadian prairies during the drought years of 1987 and 1988, so I'm fairly water-aware.

Try your local borough council's website - some of them do special offers on compost bins and water butts for residents ...
