Test your aural memory and pitch perception! Link from [livejournal.com profile] technomom.

I don't think it's fair to call it 'musical abilities' because it doesn't measure rhythmic ability.

Nifty! I got 75%, some of it was tough!
(I also have pretty poor aural skills).

wow .. .intesresting linky!

I got 80.6% but had actually hoped for better ... I'm tempted to try it again at some point when there isn't any background noise.

I found it to be a serious test of memory, more than anything else, although I understand that it was designed as such.

(Still good to be reassured that I'm not actually tone-deaf, though!)

*nod* But the rhythms used are identical and the timbres are all the same, so pitch is the only variable between samples - if you can't tell the pitch apart then you don't have good tonal short-term memory... which is a major part of being able to do things like sing in tune.

I'd like a test with simpler rhythms, and variations of less than a semi-tone. That'd be fun.

Very few people are actually tone-deaf, I think.

I found that the variety of synthesized instruments with funny timbres made it quite difficult: I'd sort of be listening to one harmonic (is that the right term?), and then when it finished, think "No, wait, something else changed, didn't it?". Like the musical equivalent of the basketball-playing gorilla experiment.

The person who wrote the test mentioned in the comments that it looks like people who are tonedeaf actually have quite normal musical memory.

Interestingly, while I only scored 80.6% on the test you posted, I got a perfect score on this one (http://www.delosis.com/listening/home.html), which has much less complicated instruments.

Won't work :(

(I'm using IE on windows, obviously too obscure to be supported...)

Oddly enough, I had to use IE when I normally use Firefox. I was quite annoyed by that.

I will attempt to borrow the laptop currently in ewt's possession, on the theory that it works there.

Aah, I glanced back at the window and it was working, must have just been taking forever and a day to load.

69.4%.

Is he calling it "musical abilities" ? I thought he was saying it was just for tonal memory/tone deafness. That's all I would call it. It isn't as if tests anyone's ability to MAKE music in any way!
