Looking for a free software wossname package that will do spreadsheets, read Word documents, and so on.

Yes, I could use Google documents for a lot of it, but I want to save some things locally and be able to work on them whilst on trains, and the internet isn't quite that ubiquitous just yet.

Suggestions? Warnings?

NeoOffice (http://www.neooffice.org/) works for me for simple stuff. It's OpenOffice ported away from ugly X11 to a nice native Mac interface.

Openoffice works well for me under Windows and Linux, don't know about MacOS, but I assume the Mac version is pretty similar.

Already suggested but I will also recommend OpenOffice, I use it to run my business and it does the job just fine.

I'd also recommend open office, I use it at home all the time.

The standard free answers are OpenOffice and NeoOffice (which is a macified version of OpenOffice).

I paid real actual money for a copy of Microsoft Word.

Office X is clunky - my Powerbook came with both Office X and Office 2004, and I prefer the latter. If I didn't have that, I would use Open Office natively in X11 (with Fink) rather than NeoOffice which I also find clunky.

Ewt, could you afford the student edition of Office 2004 for Mac with the Apple student discount?

I have Open Office on my Linux machines at work -- it's generally fine. The only issue can be that it sometimes formats things slightly differently in comparison with for-real Word, but for the most part it's no trouble at all. It seems more stable than Word. I've not used the spreadsheet much, but it has opened the few Excel files I've thrown at it without trouble. I'd give it the thumbs up personally.

I do all my 'serious' writing with a decent text editor and LaTeX, however, so I can't claim to be a huge user of Word or its Open Office equivalent -- I normally only use Word documents at work when I have to collaborate on proposals and suchlike with non-LaTeX users.

NeoOffice seems to work well enough for some author friends of mine to use it.

7 Open Offices and 2 NeoOffices. Make that 8. Is that a big enough endorsement?
