May have found a new ewtbox.
It's a good-sized (not huge but it was full of stuff and I think the useable space is about the same as in the loft here) room in an ex-council property in Bethnal Green. It's a little more than I had wanted to pay but is inclusive of everything (even wireless broadband) and in a very convenient location for me. TfL says 4 different routes to Trinty in under an hour; I can think of a few more on top of that. It's 5 minutes from Oxford House where I practice Aikido so I should be able to get on with that a little more easily (currently there are evenings where I could deal with the travel or the Aikido but not both). My commute to Hendon is about 15 minutes shorter. Leytonstone and Enfield are within easy reach (or easier than before!), and I will finally have an actual selection of local shops, some of which even sell exotic things like vegetables. The kitchen is small but useable and is cleaned every two weeks with no obvious signs of vermin (I was a bit worried at some dropping-like things on a shelf but they turned out to be cumin seeds); the end of the corridor contains a massive fridge-freezer for extra food storage. The gas oven I'll have to get used to but I'm very glad to have a gas cooker; in the event of gas shortage there is a microwave which can be used for cooking. My room has an east-facing double-glazed window and a door with a deadbolt lock and a very reasonable amount of shelving, though I'll probably still have to acquire a bookshelf. There is a washer-dryer (YAY for not being beholden to a laundrette) and there is space outside for hanging things up (so I'm not forced to use the dryer part if I don't want to and handwashing should still be possible). It feels solid and warm. I met one of the housemates, a Canajan from Hamilton, Ontario, and he seems alright. The landlord seems attentive and knowledgeable, but then he would try to come across that way.
Drawback: no garden. It's not like I was maintaining the one here very well, though. It's also on the first floor which is good from a security standpoint but sucky from a moving house standpoint. I would have preferred a south-facing window, but east-facing is next best (helps me with the getting up in The Actual Morning thing). The whole place could use a good dusting and a scrub, but it's not actually unhygienic - the important bits are clean - and with wooden (or laminate or something, not carpet anyway) floors it's not going to be difficult to keep it clean.
Exchanging munny and keys on Monday early afternoon. Wish me luck.
I sleep now, because I have to leave the house in exactly 7 hours in order to be on time for teaching tomorrow...
