I need a guarantor to sign a passport photo and some documentation in order for me to renew my Canadian passport.

Eligible guarantors

Your guarantor must:

1. Have known you personally for at least two years.
2. Live within the jurisdiction of the passport issuing office and be accessible for verification.
3. Be one of the following:
* Dentist
* Judge
* Practising lawyer
* Magistrate
* Mayor
* Medical doctor
* Notary public
* Police officer
* Signing officer of a bank

Does that fit any of you here?

Why don't they put "computer geek" on the list??

If I can't get a guarantor I have to fill out a different form, and swear in front of a legal bod that I am who I say I am. They usually charge about £20 for this, so I'd like to avoid it (also it is a huge PITA).

Is that a 'pick one of the three' list, or would it require both 2 & 3?

Ah, wait a moment. I misread the first list item.

I can put my name to practising lawyer, but am probably not the most accessible person - I guess you could throw the stuff to me in the post and I could send it back by special delivery, but then you'll have to collect it...

It might be the least amount of hassle to go to your bank manager - s/he'll charge a fee for doing it, but is probably easyish to get access to.

I can sign UK passports, but I'm not on that list, so I think I can't help you with this one.... (otoh, I may be able to witness the alternate form: check for acocuntants, or misc professionals).

surely your medical doctor can do that, or have you been changing doctors frequently?

They normally charge you for signing forms like that ...

In the six years I've lived in London I've had four different GPs, mostly due to living in four different boroughs. I've only been registered with current GP since November.

What I fail to see is how this is a robust system for verifying identity.

Birth certificates are a lot harder to get hold of in Canada than they are here, and a copy won't be accepted.

I don't think truly robust systems for verifying identity actually exist.
