But why settle for hand-cranking to generate power when you can get your hamster to do it for you (http://www.treehugger.com/files/2005/08/diy_eco-tech_up.php)?

a) I don't have a hamster
b) If I had a hamster, I wouldn't carry it around with me just in case my laptop batteries died. I might install a generator on the wheel though.
c) if I wanted to use aminal-powered generator thingum I'd probably use the bicycle generator (http://www.otherpower.com/otherpower_experiments_bicycle.html) or some variation on it.

Great link! Thanks for posting it. But if they wanted a flywheel, why not just leave the back wheel on and use that? They could build a stand to lift the rear of the bike off the ground while still letting the wheel spin, then remove the tire and tube and replace it with a belt. Loop that around the generator shaft, and they've got a super high gear ratio and a built-in flywheel. Maybe even attach some weights around the inside of the rim.

From what I can tell, they would have done had they thought of it. I don't know them personally or anything so better to ask them; I'm sure they'll be happy to answer!

Please note: these laptops are not in production. They are not—and will not—be available for purchase by individuals. (http://laptop.media.mit.edu/)

Brilliant. And I keep thinking of the people I know who are, or have been, homeless, and used their laptops as vital ways to a) get jobs, b) keep in touch with people, c) navigate the Byzantine and confusing world of American social services. I was just thinking yesterday that a laptop computer and a free wifi connection is a wonderful tool for first-world urban homeless.

There was something in the paper this morning about a new free voicemail for the homeless project. Sounded quite cool - help people stay in touch, get jobs, etc.

And it's not at all unreasonable. When I was homeless I had my mobile and I had free internet access (thanks to non-existant security in EasyEverything), which did get me a job...

Actually, I'd want one, too. Laptops are too damned expensive to carry around.

Yes! I think it's awesome that they're doing this! But I want one, too.... Trip to Cambodia in 2008, anyone?

I am so glad I wasn't the only one frothing over this. I may have to disguise myself as a small Cambodian child just to get one.

Thanks for friending me, btw. :)

You know, I'm going to go ahead and add you to my f-list. The reason I cut so many people is because they were distracting me from my goals, but I think reading your journal would actually help me with goals.
